The Spirit Shout is not only an important part of your training, but is should also be employed in an combative situation.

In the curriculum I studied, the spirit shout sounded like “sut” or “suht.”

One of the benefits to this particular spirit shout is that it tightens up the abdomen as you are throwing a strike.  This is important, since any time you are throwing a strike or kick, you are vulnerable.

The spirit shout when employed in a combative situation prepares the body to receive a blow.

The spirit shout also helps you direct energy at your target as you strike.

As the shout erupts from your abdomen, you will simultaneously focus all of the energy from your muscles into the strike, which will increase its effectiveness.

The spirit shout will also let your opponent know that they are in a serious encounter, and should think twice about continuing.

The spirit shout is typically practiced when throwing strikes in the air in a classroom setting.

Try to practice at least some of the time with your spirit shout, and I encourage you also employ it with your bag work.
