We live in turbulent times, and it appears that, at least in some cities in the U.S., violent crime is on the rise.

With this in mind, in addition to developing self protection skills, it is necessary to carry at least a couple non-lethal tools to help you get out of a bad situation.

First, I recommend the Sabre Pepper Spray product.  It is small, and easily fits in your pocket, or a small purse, and it has a belt clip as well.

If you find yourself in a sketchy neighborhood, alone, keep your pepper spray in hand so it is ready to deploy.  It is useless if you can’t deploy it in time because you are fumbling around in your purse or pocket as a situation arises.

Another good device to keep with you is a small, tactical flashlight.  This high lumens flashlight by Phixton is rechargeable, which is a nice added convenience.

In regard to these flashlights, the brighter, the better.  If you find yourself in a situation with a stranger approaching, shine it in their face.

First, they won’t want to be identified if indeed they have bad intent.  And, the bright light will temporarily blind them so you can escape if needed.

The last item you should carry a personal alarm.

The last thing a criminal wants is to draw attention to themselves.  You can buy a pack of these personal alarms by Kosin and keep them handy when you need them.

If you find yourself in a situation that warrants use of the alarm, turn it on and toss it away from you, then split.  The criminal will likely either take off themselves or try to deal with the alarm.

These are three, inexpensive pieces of equipment that you can take wherever you go with little hassle.  They will improve your chances of surviving an bad encounter significantly without the use of deadly force.

We’ll be discussing a variety of everyday carry tools in future trainings.
