The front snap kick is another basic tool that should be in the arsenal of everyone.

The front snap kick is very useful when there is a significant size disparity, as the primary target of this kick is the groin.

In the video below, I demonstrate the front snap kick in the air, and on the heavy bag.  Below the video, I provide detail on how to perform the kick.

How to perform the front snap kick.

In the air, we start out in a lunge stance.

From this position, we draw the back foot up next to the front foot.  This initially training foot is the one that we will strike with.

Once in the trail foot is drawn in beside the front foot, curl the hips upward, and then lift the knee into a high chamber position.

Once the knee reaches that high chamber, you will extend the lower leg forward and upward.

When training this kick in the air, we want to feel as if the toes are curled back toward our ankle, which pushes the ball of the foot forward.

When kicking an opponent above the waist, you want to strike with the ball of the foot.

Once the kick is complete, the lower leg retreats back into chamber position, and then you set the foot back into a lunge stance.

You’ll note in the video that I trained the kick into the middle of the bag, and then under the bottom.

When you use this kick to strike into the groin, you want to be moving forward, and you want to actually strike with the bottom of the shin.

This will cause maximum damage so that you can either escape or follow up to finish the fight.  It will also help to prevent breaking your foot in case the opponent sees it coming and blocks it.

At the end of the video, you’ll note my use of distraction by pointing upward and behind.  This helps to ensure you can get the kick into the groin without the opponent seeing it coming.

I’ll cover that thought more down the road.
