Practical Kung Fu…

…Serious Training for Serious People

What is Practical Kung Fu?

Form Application Training

Practical Kung Fu is a holistic approach to developing your mind and body.  In other words, Practical Kung Fu is an approach to living a healthy lifestyle that also helps you develop skills.

Practical Kung Fu combines traditional martial arts training with combatives self-defense training and modern strength and fitness training.

This is the only place online where you will find all of this training in one program.

The program is designed to get you healthy, strong, fit, and more skilled in dealing with violence in an increasingly dangerous world.

In other words, this is serious training for serious people.

Who Am I?

My name is Scott Cole.  I’m married with three adult daughters to my first wife, and three adult stepchildren to my second wife.

I am NOT a kung fu master, personal trainer or former Navy SEAL.

However, I am an educated businessman and former athlete who trained in a traditional Kung Fu school for eight years; has trained in a variety of fitness programs; and who has studied a variety of approaches to self defense.

As a 57 year old man, I’ve developed a keen interest in improving my own health and developing skills to help protect myself, family and friends in an ever more dangerous world.

With all that said, I consider myself to be a curator of information that will help anyone get healthy and strong, and develop skills.

The Practical Kung Fu program puts together the best of all of the knowledge I’ve gained through traditional martial arts training, training as an athlete, and training as a middle-aged man.

A Complete Strength and Fitness Program

Learning The Deadlift

I believe that strength training with barbells is the most important form of exercise you can do for the long run.

First, increased strength will allow you to hit and kick harder, and that can pay obvious dividends if you are ever confronted with street violence.

Second, untrained people begin to lose muscle mass starting around age 40.  After age 70, this process, known as sarcopenia, accelerates.

The result is that many people of an advanced age lose much of their mobility due to a lack of strength and muscle.

Strength training with barbells will allow you to avoid that problem.

Traditional kung fu training helps to improve your mobility through practice of your kicks, stance work and forms.  We build upon that through a complete flexibility program.

Traditional kung fu training also helps you develop your mind through meditation and focused practice of your art.

Lastly, conditioning also plays a significant role in our fitness program.

Being strong is great, but a well-conditioned athlete will prove to be more capable overall in a variety of situations.

Consider dealing with multiple attackers, or the need to pull multiple people from a burning building.

With this in mind, a variety of conditioning workouts are included in the program to provide balance in your training.

To enhance all of this, I include a considerable amount of information regarding diet and nutrition.

I should note here that to get the full benefit of this program, access to gym equipment such as a power rack, barbells and dumbbells is necessary.

The need for combatives training

If you read or watch the news, you’ve seen or heard about the statistics showing an increase in violent crime over the last several years.

Many of the crimes involve random acts of violence that could be avoided altogether with proper training.

One of the issues with the typical martial arts training is that there is no training of soft skills.  Soft skills are what will help you avoid bad situations altogether.

Soft skills will also teach you to understand when violence is about to occur, and how to have the proper mindset to deal with that violence.

While traditional martial arts training is technique based and focused on complex motor skills, combatives training is based on some key principles and the application of gross motor skills.

These principles and gross motor skills are more effective in dealing with violence than traditional martial arts techniques since stress reduces the ability to think and execute those more complex techniques.

The key to success in any violent encounter is having the mindset to properly deal with the threat.

Practical Kung Fu provides the foundation necessary for dealing with street violence that has become more prevalent in our society.

This foundation is based upon the work of such combatives instructors as Lee Morrison, Kelly McCann, Tony Blauer and Damian Ross.

The Program

Practical Kung Fu is designed to be delivered over the course of twelve months.

Each month you will gain access to a new module that provides you with traditional Kung Fu lessons, combatives training, strength training programming, and conditioning workouts.

The program will provide you with information that literally took me a lifetime to accumulate.

Here is more of what is included:

Kung Fu

An older me

The first six months of Kung Fu training cover all the basic strikes, kicks, blocks and stance work you will find in a traditional setting.

Additionally, we cover meditation and breath work to help with training the mind.

We follow up with training in a few sequences to assist with foot work and mobility, and you will begin to learn how Kung Fu adapts animal movements into the design of its fighting systems and tactics.

The last six months cover three traditional Kung Fu forms… a leopard form, tiger form and a dragon form.

You will learn the movements of the form along with form application.

The primary benefit you derive from traditional kung fu training is skill development.  It greatly assists in developing mobility and athleticism.

I should note here that a key piece of equipment you will need is a heavy bag.  It is a critical tool for the development of your punching and kicking skills.

Combatives

Combatives training is critical to dealing with real life violence.

Street violence

With this training, you will learn about…

  • How to become more aware of your surroundings so you can avoid becoming a victim
  • Situational control so you better understand how to deal with a threat
  • How to develop the proper mindset for dealing with a deadly threat
  • Which non-lethal tools you should always carry to better deal with criminal threats
  • How to better develop your unarmed skills for dealing with assault
  • and more

Strength Training Program

Your unarmed skills won’t get you far if you are too weak to deliver a hard punch or kick.

As such, included in Practical Kung Fu is a strength training program designed to greatly improve your strength over a period of six months.

Training in my garage

This training involves the use of Olympic barbells and focuses on the four best compound movements for building total strength… the squat, deadlift, bench press and overhead press.

As the program progresses, a few more exercises are incorporated, such as chin ups, lat pulldowns and rows.

Therefore, to get the most out this training, you will need access to proper equipment, such as a squat rack, pull up bar and lat pulldown machine.

You will be provided detailed explanations on how to perform the lifts and how to adjust your workouts to achieve the best results possible.

Conditioning

The initial months of Practical Kung Fu are focused on building strength.

However, there is a conditioning component in these early stages that we build on throughout the program.

The goal of the strength and conditioning portion of Practical Kung Fu is to help you achieve your overall fitness potential, no matter your age.

You’ll learn a variety of workouts designed to increase your VO2 max, build significant endurance, and build muscle endurance without sacrificing much of your new-found strength.

In the latter stages, we begin to incorporate some concepts employed by Navy SEAL candidates as they prepare for their final fitness tests.

Miscellaneous

To help you get the most out of everything mentioned above, you will be provided with a diet and nutrition guide along with a complete stretching guide.

Program Delivery

Each month you will gain access to a new module to be found on this website.
